The Hawaiian Shirt worn proudly by tacky tourists, Miami Vice fans, and Mr. Furley will live on but the person who brought us this classic fashion trend has passed away. Alfred Shaheen was a textile manufacturer who revolutionized the garment industry in postwar Hawaii by using old kimono fabric to create the Aloha Shirt. Not only did this man provide comfort to Elvis, Jimmy Buffet, and Weird Al Yankovic but he paved the way for Aloha Fridays which eventually spread to the continental United States and became known as Casual Fridays. Though we left our Hawaiian Shirts in the 80’s we salute this man for bringing us closer to t-shirts and further from starched white dress shirts! Thanks Alfred we hope they buried you the most stylish of Aloha Shirts. May you rest in peace.
