Custom printed t-shirts and the ACLU have fought against many organizations to help protect rights under the first amendment. Recently, students from Palmerton Area High School wore t-shirts protesting the schools new dress code that bans facial piercing and unnatural hair color hair. The t-shirts simply said “Property of PHS”. Each t-shirt also contained the student’s identification number. School administration saw the t-shirts as disruptive and several students were given suspensions and asked to remove their t-shirts. The students contacted the local ACLU. The ACLU threatened legal actions towards the school causing the t-shirt ban and suspensions to be lifted. There is no word yet rather PHS is taking the advice given in a previous blog post from suggesting the t-shirts become the new school uniform. However, we are guessing that they don’t want a daily reminder that they were outsmarted by their students.
